Unruly and tremor video have published a joint study, “consumer survey of holiday shopping season 2020”, which explores consumer attitudes, expectations and plans before the 2020 holiday season. In September 2020, more than 800 American consumers participated in the survey.
Despite the tremendous impact covid-19 has had on people’s lifestyles in the past few months, American consumers are still looking forward to holidays. 64% of the respondents were excited about the holiday this year. 42% of consumers think that covid-19 should be referred to in holiday advertisements; 57% of consumers hope that advertisements can make them happy. When planning holiday advertising activities, brands should pay special attention to the celebration of festivals and balance the recognition of consumers’ difficulties.
The study reveals how consumers prioritize and plan their holiday shopping as the weather turns colder:
75% of consumers plan to complete at least half of their holiday shopping online; 53% of respondents will increase the frequency of online shopping.
53% of respondents watch TV more frequently; 58% of Americans surf the Internet more frequently.
Forty one percent of Americans think television advertising is one of the most influential channels for holiday buying decisions.
50% of respondents plan to do most of their holiday shopping in November.
Although great changes have taken place in consumers’ shopping attitude and behavior since the beginning of covid-19 popularity, brands can still attract consumers and succeed in holiday shopping.
Other major findings include:
89% of the households with an annual income of more than $100000 plan to complete at least half of their holiday shopping online, followed by those with an annual income of $40000-100000 (79%) and those with an annual income of less than $40000 (67%).
Nearly 56 percent of Americans do not travel on holiday; however, more than 25 percent of consumers plan to travel within the state; nearly 15 percent plan to travel outside the state.
