Ofcom released the 2022 report on media use and attitudes of children and parents. The main findings include:

Online access and attitude

Almost all children are online in 2021 (99%); Most people use mobile phones (72%) or tablets (69%).

36% of primary school-age children do not always have access to sufficient online learning equipment at home, compared with 17% of middle school students. 11% of primary school students have little or no access to online learning devices, compared with 3% of secondary school students.

Online behavior

Using video sharing platforms (VSP) such as YouTube or tiktok is the most popular online activity among children aged 3-17 (95%); Although most people choose to watch content on VSP, 31% of 12-17 year olds publish their own content.

Among all kinds of online platforms, 89% of children use YouTube the most, while 50% of children use tiktok. But tiktok is more popular in publishing content.

Online profile

Most children under the age of 13 register their profile on at least one social media application or website; 33% of the parents of children aged 5-7 said their children had registered their personal data, and 60% of the parents of children aged 8-11 said the same.

62% of children aged 8-17 said they registered multiple profiles on some online applications and websites.

42% of parents of children aged 3-17 know the minimum age requirement for using most social media (13 years). 38% of parents of children aged 8-11 allow their children to use social media.

Content consumption

Children still watch live TV, but are more likely to watch paid on demand streaming services; 78% of children watched services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime video and Disney +, while 47% watched live TV.

Although 6 / 10 of teenagers said they used social media to get news, it was also the most unreliable or inaccurate news source; Teenagers aged 12-15 are more likely to trust their family (68%) or television (65%).

Parents’ concerns about children’s content consumption

Seven in 10 parents of children under the age of 16 worry about what their children see online. The most interesting aspect is the age inappropriate content.

Compared with online content, 46% of parents are worried that their children will see bad language, violence or disturbing content on TV.
