The carbon peak in 2030 and the carbon neutral target in 2060 press the “acceleration key” for China’s carbon reduction and decarbonization, and also put forward new requirements for enterprises to adapt to the development mode of low-carbon era. Many international leading enterprises have put carbon neutrality in the prominent position of enterprise strategy, evaluate the substantial impact of carbon neutrality on their market valuation and enterprise operation, and start to formulate a detailed low-carbon transformation roadmap. Whether enterprises can successfully realize transformation will become the key to maintain high-speed development and even survive in the market in the future. It is urgent for enterprises to actively respond to climate change!

Deloitte China carried out this survey in order to understand the awareness of Chinese enterprises on climate change issues and decarbonization readiness, and effectively input the risks and challenges of enterprises under the new situation. The questionnaire covers 5 sub topics, with a total of 25 questions.

The surveyed enterprises cover six industries, most of which are large enterprises. 37% of the enterprises surveyed come from the energy, resources and industry (ERI) industry, which has high carbon emission intensity and pays more attention to climate change issues than other industries.

Main findings

1. The respondents are generally aware that the carbon neutral target will have an impact on their business.

2. The interviewees believe that the overall opportunities of climate change for enterprises are far greater than the risks, especially in technology and innovation, customer / consumer preferences, brand and reputation.

3. Only a few enterprises have set specific decarbonization / net zero targets and set a timetable.

four   Despite the importance attached to climate change, the specific actions taken by the interviewed enterprises to deal with climate change are few, and the most action taken by the interviewed enterprises in the past year is waste reduction and recycling. The purchasing demand of renewable energy is gradually increasing.

Deloitte’s suggestion

Recommendation 1:

It is suggested that enterprises should enhance the sense of responsibility to cope with climate change, take the initiative and act actively.

Recommendation 2:

It is suggested that enterprises should formulate a scientific and effective climate change strategy and roadmap as soon as possible, establish an effective work management framework, optimize the internal management process, and enhance the execution of enterprise climate change actions.

Recommendation 3:

It is suggested that enterprises should be benchmarked with international leading enterprises, understand and participate in global initiatives related to climate change, and strengthen and improve the disclosure of climate change information.

Recommendation 4:

It is suggested that the government should gradually establish and improve the policy system to support the green and low-carbon development of enterprises, adhere to the combination of “effective market” and “promising government”, and take more market-oriented measures to encourage the green transformation of enterprises; Optimize the market environment, so that market participants more and more recognized green enterprises.
