The following is the Studies have found that melatonin may improve memory and protect cognitive ability From Tokyo Medical and Dental University recommended by recordtrend.com. And this article belongs to the classification: Life data.
Melatonin may improve long-term memory and help protect cognitive abilities that decline over time, according to a new study in Japan. Melatonin is often sold as a sleep aid. This potential benefit relates to melatonin and two metabolites produced by melatonin, known as n1-acetyl-n2-formyl-5-methoxycaninuria (AFMK) and n1-acetyl-5-methoxycaninuria (AMK).
The new study comes from Tokyo Medical and Dental University; it involves laboratory mice, not humans. But the researchers say the findings may also apply to humans. The study involved the ability of mice to recognize novel objects, which is to present new and familiar objects to mice and observe how they interact with them.
Mice are naturally curious and spend more time exploring new objects than they have seen before. This makes it possible to study the memory of mice if they present them with an object they have seen before, but they study it as a new one. The researchers could think that the mice had memory problems, which meant they forgot that they had seen the object before.
When it comes to melatonin, the body breaks down hormones into molecules called metabolites. The researchers studied the effects of these metabolites, which are present in the brain, and whether they affect cognition. They evaluated them with mice, showed them the items, familiarized them, and then gave them melatonin and its two metabolites an hour later.
The next day, mice were shown the same items, and the researchers observed improved memory in rodents. After 15 minutes of exposure to older, memory impaired mice, a single dose of the metabolite AMK was given to enable them to remember them for four days after the test.
When melatonin was blocked from forming AMK metabolites in the brain, the researchers also found that the same long-term memory enhancement was not possible. Mice of all ages benefit from melatonin. More research is needed to determine if melatonin has the same effect on humans.
