The world’s largest aviation alliance chooses AWS to improve system stability, operational efficiency and passenger experience
Beijing – December 15, 2020 – today, Amazon cloud services (AWS) announced that Star Alliance, the world’s largest aviation alliance, has moved all its IT infrastructure to the world’s leading cloud AWS to reduce costs and improve performance, becoming a more agile company in the cloud. Star Alliance is working with Tata consulting services (TCS), the core consulting partner of the AWS partner network, to migrate all data, platforms and business critical applications to AWS and close the data center, which will reduce the total cost of ownership of infrastructure by 25%. At the same time, taking advantage of AWS’s leading advantages in analysis, security, database management, storage and machine learning, Star Alliance provides real-time insight to its 26 member airlines, which can help improve passengers’ global travel experience even under the uncertainty caused by the new crown epidemic.
By moving to AWS, Star Alliance has become more agile and can immediately optimize the use and cost of existing infrastructure, especially during the outbreak, to meet the changing needs of global air travel. When quarantine orders and travel restrictions come into effect, Star Alliance immediately reduces its infrastructure space footprint and spending by 30%, reducing the use of AWS capacity, without having to pay for excess local deployment capacity. Through AWS, Star Alliance is preparing for the relaxation of global travel restrictions and the return of customers to regular flights in the future. Now it only takes half of the time to introduce applications. The services are supported by Amazon elastic container service (Amazon elastic container service) and AWS fargate (server free computing engine for containers, which can easily build applications), so that passengers can travel more easily and safely. For example, Star Alliance uses Amazon Aurora (AWS’s relational database for the cloud) to build a baggage tracking application that processes data from multiple airline baggage systems, providing operational reports and centralized reports so that airline passengers at airports around the world can track luggage. In addition, the application of “Star Alliance member Airlines check-in center” on AWS can process and analyze more than 12 million transactions per month during peak periods, enabling passengers to check in for multi stop trips and obtain boarding passes through Star Alliance member airlines, so as to make the boarding process more smooth and seamless.
By becoming a data-driven organization in the cloud, Star Alliance is using AWS analysis and database services, including Amazon relational database service (Amazon RDS), Amazon Athena (AWS server free, interactive query service using standard SQL) and Amazon Quicksight (AWS business intelligence service) to identify future travel needs and trends while improving the customer experience. Star Alliance’s transit decision-making tool can help its member airlines manage at-risk flight transfers in real time, so that they can take proactive actions, such as fast tracking passengers through customs and Immigration (border inspection), and quickly transporting customers and their luggage to connecting flights. The tool is a complement to Star Alliance’s new “transfer service” (a mobile app that provides passengers with the fastest path to the departure gate and unlocks the airport express lane when the transfer is tight) and provides a faster non-contact airport experience. In addition, by migrating the traditional historical database to Amazon Aurora, Star Alliance can enable its members’ customer service teams to make quick and intelligent decisions, help them process frequent passenger plan requests more quickly, and provide personalized travel experience combined with passenger preferences. In the future, Star Alliance plans to create a data lake on Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) to centralize the data access of member airlines to accelerate the development of enterprise applications and customer functions. In addition, Star Alliance will also apply AWS machine learning services such as Amazon sagemaker (a service that enables data scientists and developers to quickly build, train and deploy machine learning models) to the integrated data, so as to provide value-added services, such as preventing loyalty related fraud in member frequent traveler networks.
“We decided to move to AWS entirely to get the system reliability and scalability we need to support more and more global travelers to become Star Alliance members every year,” said Jeremy Drury, director of digital and technology of Star Alliance. “This epidemic also proves the need for flexible and agile infrastructure in the cloud. No one can predict what will happen by 2020 to the present, but thanks to our cooperation with AWS, we have been able to quickly adjust our targets and cut costs. In addition to saving costs and meeting flexible needs, AWS also provides us with a comprehensive set of cloud services, enabling us to innovate quickly, launch new services, ensure the safety of passengers, and constantly reshape the global travel experience. “
“By fully migrating to AWS, Star Alliance is using the flexibility of the cloud to adjust operations to industry trends in response to dramatically changing market dynamics,” said David Peller, general manager of AWS travel and hotel industry. As a global organization, Star Alliance is an example of successfully embracing cloud computing to tide over uncertain times. As global borders are expected to open again, we are pleased to work with Star Alliance to help them innovate on a large scale using the AWS comprehensive service suite, while raising the possible standards for a new era of global air travel. “
“The new global epidemic has made it even more necessary for the tourism industry to embrace new technologies, improve operational flexibility, business agility, and improve the ability to respond to changing customer needs and local regulations,” said Arun pradeep, head of European tourism, transportation and hospitality at Tata consulting services After accelerating the IT transformation of Star Alliance on AWS, we are now using advanced analysis and machine learning capabilities to help Star Alliance maximize value and provide a higher level of personalization and superior customer experience. “
