Sustainable development goal 7 (sdg7) on energy outlines the clear objectives of universal access to energy, increasing renewable energy and improving energy efficiency, and the Paris Agreement provides the basis for limiting greenhouse gas emissions. However, although many countries have made considerable progress in achieving these goals, the Asia Pacific region has not reached the goal of limiting global temperature rise to less than two degrees Celsius in sdg7 or the Paris Agreement.
Green incentives can accelerate the deployment of sustainable technologies by directing investment to renewable energy, energy efficiency and electric vehicles. However, a policy framework must be established to create the required fiscal space while unleashing technological, innovative and human capabilities and potential. Although some Asia Pacific countries are demonstrating their leadership and new technologies and methods have emerged, further efforts are needed to consolidate policies and better involve the private sector in financing sustainable energy transformation.
The purpose of the present report is to assess the ambitions and progress of ESCAP member states in achieving global, regional and national sustainable energy goals and to discuss solutions to major challenges. The report assessed the potential of sustainable energy and the 19th covid-19 Conference on building better mutual promotion, provided suggestions on how to develop greener and more inclusive energy systems, and provided greater resilience to future crises. The analysis of this report draws on the latest data of sdg7 objectives, considers a series of cases and key lessons from different experiences in the whole region, and provides reference and improvement for future decision-making.
